Part of Thread 9's mission is to focus on reducing and reusing clothing waste. Globally, 80% of discarded textiles are doomed for the landfill or incineration. Only 20% are actually reused or recycled. The clothing that ends up in landfills can sit there for 200-plus years, and as it decomposes, it emits methane—a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon. All upcycled pieces come from clean and unstained human clothing. I make sure to wash and inspect all articles of clothing before I use it. I also make sure that I reinforce all my final creations just like I would a brand new piece. Everything is professionally tailored and sewed, so the piece looks entirely new.
Another part of my mission is to save my scraps from landfills. I save every fabric scrap and unusable piece of clothing for reuse in future dog toys or pillow stuffings. I believe in my mission.
